A Shorter Commute, A Better Life: Finding the Right Location

Let us talk about something that affects your quality of life more than almost any other factor in your home: the daily commute. How long does it take you to get to work? To the grocery store? To your kids' school? To your parents' house? The answer shapes your schedule, your stress levels, and how much time you actually get to spend doing what you love.

I have helped many clients in Medina County and Southwest Cuyahoga County make the decision to move specifically to improve their commute and their location. The results are almost always the same: they wish they had done it sooner.

What a Long Commute Really Costs You

Most people think about commute costs in terms of gas and car maintenance. Those are real, but they are small compared to the hidden costs. A 45-minute each-way commute adds up to 7.5 hours a week in the car. That is 375 hours a year. Fifteen full days of your life, every year, spent behind a windshield.

Now imagine what you could do with those fifteen days. More time with your kids. A hobby you never have time for. An extra hour of sleep every morning. Dinner together as a household on weeknights. The health and relationship benefits of reclaiming that time are enormous.

And then there is the financial side. Cutting 20 miles off your daily round-trip commute in a car that gets 25 miles per gallon saves you roughly $1,200 a year at current gas prices, not counting wear and tear on your vehicle. Over the life of a 30-year mortgage, that is more than $35,000 in savings.

The Sweet Spot: Where To Live for a Better Commute

One of the best things about living in our area is the range of options. Here is how the communities break down for different commute priorities:

If you work in downtown Cleveland: Strongsville, Middleburg Heights, and Brook Park offer excellent access to I-71 and I-480. A commute from Strongsville to downtown is typically 25 to 30 minutes. From Middleburg Heights, even less. You get suburban space with urban access.

If you work in Akron or southern Summit County: Medina, Hinckley, Valley City, and Brunswick put you within 20 to 30 minutes of Akron. Medina's historic square is a 25-minute drive to downtown Akron, and the commute is almost entirely highway.

If you need access to the Cleveland Clinic or University Circle: Brecksville, Broadview Heights, and North Royalton are ideal. You can take I-77 north and reach the Clinic in about 25 minutes. These communities also have strong school systems and large homes on generous lots.

If you work remotely but occasionally need to go in: Berea, Columbia Station, and Olmsted Falls offer more space for your money and a more relaxed pace of life. When you do need to head to the office, you are 30 minutes from downtown Cleveland and 20 minutes from the airport.

It Is Not Just About Work

Your location affects more than your work commute. Think about how close you are to:

  • Family. Being 10 minutes from your parents or your adult children changes how often you see them. When you are close, Sunday dinner becomes a regular thing rather than a planned monthly event.
  • Schools and activities. Living in the same town as your kids' schools, sports fields, and music lessons cuts down on the afternoon taxi service and gives your children more independence as they get older.
  • Shopping, dining, and healthcare. Access to grocery stores, pharmacies, urgent care, and your favorite restaurants matters more than you realize until they are 30 minutes away. Communities like Strongsville, Medina, and Parma have excellent access to shopping and healthcare.
  • Parks and recreation. Hinckley Reservation, the Medina County Park District, and the Cleveland Metroparks offer incredible outdoor access. Living close to a park entrance turns a weekend hike from a planned excursion into an after-dinner stroll.

The Trade-Offs Worth Making

Moving to improve your location often involves trade-offs. You might get a smaller house for a shorter commute, or a larger lot for a longer drive. The key is knowing what matters most to your family and prioritizing that.

I have had clients choose a slightly smaller home in Strongsville over a bigger one in a farther suburb because the daily routine worked better. And I have had others choose a longer commute for the land and privacy of Valley City or Columbia Station. Both were right for their priorities.
